Finding and Fueling Your Magic
When I talk about finding and fueling your magic, what comes to mind? For me, it’s that intangible thing that makes me want to jump out of bed and get things done. I’m in a clear state of mind and hyper-focused on accomplishing a specific goal.
It’s tough to say where magic comes from, sometimes it “just happens” and other times, it’s precedented by an unexpected life crisis. Either way, I feel ready and excited (and maybe a little or a lot nervous) to take on something new—something magical.
Looking at Things Differently
Humans are funny—we’re rarely motivated to change unless forced to do so. But when life happens (for example, a job loss, missed opportunity or unwelcomed medical diagnosis), we have the opportunity to turn it into something positive. We have a choice: we can either focus on what we have lost, or what we wish had happened—or, we can look at things differently. Think of Batman; he gained his superhero powers because his parents were murdered. Disney’s Bambi experienced a similar loss and gained the courage to venture out into a better world. The good news is, we don’t have to wait for tragedy to make magic, and even better, we can start today.
It’s All in Your Head
Whether something good or bad happens to us, the way we react is a choice that we make. We can spin things positively (in our heads) or negatively (also in our heads). We might not always feel in control, but in fact, we absolutely are. We are the drivers of both our thoughts and reactions, which means that we also have the ability to change them. Everything starts in our head and what we do with that often determines the outcome.
Change Starts Now
The Dalai Lama believes that everything we are supposed to be—including what we are supposed to be doing for others—is already inside us. If that isn’t magical, I don’t know what is! So, our job in life is to find out what that is, and then pursue that dream. You were born with it. Maybe you’ve made some bad decisions in the past, but that doesn’t have to stop you from making better decisions, starting today. You can’t change the past, but you—and your head—can decide what you do from here.
Fueling Your Magic
Now that we’ve talked about finding your magic, let’s look at how you’re going to fuel it. Think about who you are as a person, what you’ve been through, what has made the biggest impact on you, what your friends value in you, and even things that you’ve been teased about. How can you turn those things into “fuel” to help you accomplish your goals? Typically, the things that either light you up or make you smile are the things to which you are naturally drawn. Those things are your fuel. If, on the other hand, you are doing the things that you love, but not getting excited about them anymore, it might be time to clear your head. The noise of life may have gotten in the way of your true passions. Remember, everything starts in your head and goes from there.
Life gets messy. Sometimes we get so wrapped up in the “doing” that we forget about what our purpose is. Take some time each and every day to reflect on what gets you motivated to keep going. When you step off course (because that’s what humans do), commit to stepping right back on and making your dreams come true.
Louis “The Laser Guy’s” Three Additional Tips for Finding and Fueling Your Magic:
- Create a vision board with pictures and quotes that inspire you—I’m a firm believer that visual cues (as well as journals) help us manifest our goals and passions.
- Invest in some quiet time to think about your superhero powers; what have you been though that has made you stronger, smarter and more resilient? How can you use that to your advantage?
- Surround yourself with like-minded people who tackle their obstacles and motivate you to do the same—this could include family, friends, co-workers, motivational speakers, Instagram celebrities and more.
